The fun of the Real Housewives to me is that we are all different, and we don’t always agree. I guess that’s what makes it interesting to watch. I usually play the referee. They call me Miss Switzerland, because I always try to stay neutral. No one wants to brawl at a social gathering—unless you’re shooting the Housewives show.
Sometimes people get carried away with their expert knowledge or passion, and the conversation gets out of hand. If the discussion gets too erudite and you can see others are not that interested, you will be doing everyone a favor by changing the subject.
If someone makes a faux pas, shift the conversation away from the embarrassing situation as gracefully as you can. Let’s say someone asks an acquaintance in your presence, “How is your wife?” and the couple just had a nasty divorce, you can step in and say something light, like “He hopes far away. They’ve divorced recently.” I often say, “Are we happy about that or are we sad about that?” That way you direct the focus away from the blunder and give the divorced friend a chance to recover. If you asked the embarrassing question and the person you are talking to fills you in, just apologize and change the subject. “I’m sorry to hear that. I had no idea. Would you care for a drink?”
